A Few Random Questions

Post  Phunetik on Wed May 08, 2013 8:53 pm

Hey guys... How is everyone? What a Face

So, as I sit here recovering from a wisdom teeth removal, I thought of a few questions that I have been wanting to bring up for discussion here:

1) Does anyone have any issues with how CT handles volumes? Let me clarify... I have had most of my comics generically tagged for awhile. When I input those, I remove those tags, but CT does not remove the volume. Also, is there a way to name the files before import that will automatically populate the volume? I ask, because it might make mass tagging easier (Heavy Metal comes to mind).

2) Is there a way to manually change a field for multiple comics? For instance... I would like to highlight a group of comics - lets say issue 1-100 of 100 Bullets, all different and spelled wrong - and then go into the series field, and type "100 Bullets" and then hit save or something and it change them all. This does not seem to work for me, but would make some stuff easier. I wasn't sure if this can be done, so I did not want to make a feature request until I knew for sure.

3) Has anyone dealt with the tagging of Heavy Metal, yet? Isn't it a real pain in the butt?

cheers

Are you sure you're not still under the influence of the meds?

I kid.

1) I'm not sure really what you mean with your first question. Can you give a specific example? As far as setting the volume number via the filename, see here:
https://code.google.com/p/comictagger/wiki/UserGuide#Filename_Parsing

2) You can't do this in the GUI. It's really very easy on the command-line tho. For example, to set the ComicBookLover Publisher tag for a list of files:
Code:
ComicTagger -s -t cbl -m "publisher=Quality Comics"  "Plastic Man*.cbz"
See the wiki for more examples:
https://code.google.com/p/comictagger/wiki/UserGuide#CLI_User_Guide

Someday I will implement batch tag editing in the GUI, but no immediate plans.
https://code.google.com/p/comictagger/wiki/RoadMap

3) I haven't dealt with Heavy Metal. What is the problem? Maybe we can fix it.

Also for #2, when you auto-tag in the GUI, you can specially set the Series for all the files that you auto-tag. So you can set "100 Bullets" and if the issue number is found correctly, they should all get tagged correctly.

I am mos def still on the meds. Hillbilly heroin... Shocked

For #1, just take a comic that is already tagged and remove the tags... for me, the volume tag never gets removed. Thanks for the link... that at least helps with stuff that I never tagged in CBL before CT came out.

For #2, Thanks for the CLI... please implement in the GUI sooner rather than later. It would make this great app that much better.

For #3, its annoying with Heavy Metal, because comicvine lists the issue number as the year and month, so for volume 5, number 5... the issue number is 198108. It makes it impossible - at least so far as I can see - to do a batch. I'm going through individually, so at the end of the day its whatever... but damn if it isn't frustrating as shit.

1) OK, by specific example, I mean: "Can you tell me the exact name of a file for which this problem presents itself?"

If you remove the tags, you remove the tags. But if your file name has the volume number in it, it's going get parsed out when your comic is loaded in the GUI, just like the issue number, series name, publish year, and count (if present).

I used to try and figure out the volume number, but it became such a nightmare with all the different reboots and renumberings and all this other nonsense the big two do with their comics. I've found the easiest thing is to just make sure your comics are separated by folders and then in CT's Preferences, under the Comic Vine tab, tick the "Use Series Start Date as Volume" box. Unless I'm mistaken, CT pretty much ignores the volume number in the filename anyway when searching for matches, so it's not going to speed up the process.

Here's an example of my basic folder structure:

Comics/Avengers/Avengers (1963)/Avengers 001.cbz
Comics/Avengers/Avengers (1996)/Avengers 001.cbz
Comics/Avengers/Avengers (1998)/Avengers 001.cbz

The filenames are all the same, but they're in different folders. Then in CBL, the volume for each of these is the year that the comic launched. Makes the whole thing a lot easier to deal with. Although there are still some discrepancies, but this is mostly on the fault of Comic Vine. For example, some genius decided it would be a good idea to combine volumes 1 and 2 of Amazing Spider-Man into one massive volume. So instead of Amazing Spider-Man (1999) #1, it's now Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #442. And that caused me some MASSIVE headaches.
